Prototyping Labs and Facilities is a workspace offered by Dal IDEA Hub for entrepreneurs and small businesses in Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador).

On-site prototyping facilities including mechanical assembly, electronics building and testing, 3D printing, and heavy prototyping labs with CNC, waterjet, welding, and machining equipment.

Program details

The Emera ideaHUB provides access to multiple prototyping labs within the Emera IDEA Building. The Robert J. Gillespie Family Lab (mechanical assembly) includes hand tools, drill press, band saw, scroll saw, layout tools, multimeters, sheet metal bender, arbour press, and coordinate-measuring machine. The Randell Family Lab (electronics) includes multimeters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, DC power supplies, soldering stations, Voltera circuit board printer, and Arduino supplies. The MAXIMUM Tools Additive Manufacturing Lab includes 4x Prusa MK3 (PLA/PETG), 2x Dimension (ABS), 1x Markforged Onyx Pro (carbon reinforced nylon), and 2x Form 3 SLA printers. The heavy prototyping lab includes machine lathes, vertical knee mills, universal milling machine, surface grinder, HAAS VF2YT CNC mill, Tormach CNC lathe, CNC router, waterjet cutter, MIG & TIG welding, and overhead gantry cranes. Third-floor labs accessible to ideaBRIDGE participants; first floor shops available on a fee-for-service basis.

Who qualifies

Access varies by program enrollment. ideaBRIDGE residents have full third-floor lab access. ideaBUILD participants have access to labs. ideaDESIGN participants have access to some prototyping resources. First floor shops available on fee-for-service basis depending on availability.
